It was in 1992 that Chief Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was born on 29th March 1952, began his political career in Nigeria. Between 29th May 1999 and 29th May 2007, he was the 12th governor of Lagos State in Nigeria and was succeeded by Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN). His full name is Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu.
He was appointed Senator for the Lagos West constituency in Lagos State in 1993, which opened his political career. Besides being a politician, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also an accountant. He is the second richest politician in Nigeria and the most powerful politician in the Southwestern part of Nigeria.
Education
In addition to his education at St John’s primary school in Aroloya Lagos, Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended a children’s home school in Ibadan, southwest Nigeria. Ahmed is also known as “Jagaban.” His secondary education was completed at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Political Career
When Bola Tinubu began to gain traction in Nigerian politics, he became a member of the Social Democratic Party, SDP. In 1992, due to his devotion and passion for politics, he joined the People’s Front faction, led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. He went into exile in 1993 following the coup d’etat led by Sani Abacha, the Nigerian defense minister.
Tinubu had in an interview described his exile journey as follows:
I Disguised With A Huge Turban And Babanriga And Escaped Into Benin Republic On A Motorbike. My Old Hausa Friend Gave The Clothes To Me. In Fact, When I Appeared To Kudirat Abiola, She Didn’t Know That I Was The One! I Gave Her Some Information And Some Briefing. I Left At 1 A.m. While In Benin Republic, I Was Still Coming To Badagry To Ferry People, And Organise And Coordinate The Struggle With Others On Ground. We Put A Group Together, Ferrying Nadeco People Across. It Was A Very Challenging Time. I Can’t Forget People Like Segun Maiyegun And Other Young Guys In The Struggle. I Would Come From Benin To Hold Meetings With Them And Sneak Back.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu
He returned from exile in 1998 and became governor of Lagos state in May 1999. He created 37 Local Government Areas in the state. As a governor, he ruled for eight good years. What’s more? Because of his hatred for the PDP, he made several efforts to ensure the APC candidates won the 2015 election. As a result, he earned a lot of respect from the northerners.
Furthermore, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the godfather of many prominent politicians in Lagos state and in southwestern Nigeria. There has been even speculation that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that without his help, President Muhammadu Buhari wouldn’t have become President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Family
Tinubu married Oluremi Tinubu, who is a former senator representing the Lagos Central senatorial district, in 1987. They have 3 children: Zainab Abisola Tinubu, Habibat Tinubu, and Olayinka Tinubu. He fathered 3 children from previous relationships: Kazeem Olajide Tinubu (born 12 October 1974 – 31 October 2017), Folashade Tinubu (born 17 June 1976), and Oluwaseyi Tinubu (born 13 October 1985), whose mother is rumored to be the former air hostess and prophetess Bunmi Oshonike.
Tinubu’s mother, Abibatu Mogaji, died in London on 15 June 2013 at the age of 96.
Net Worth
As the second wealthiest politician in Nigeria, he is estimated to have a net worth of $4 billion. Due to a statement, he made during a political campaign, in which he claimed he was wealthier than Osun State (at the time), he is widely recognized as very rich. The statement convinced many Nigerians that indeed he controlled a lot of Nigerian funds.
As a result of his power as a once two-term Governor of Lagos State, he is believed to also control the majority of the political influence in most Western states in Nigeria. Some of his assets include the state-of-the-art Hotel known as Oriental Hotel, which is strategically located on Victoria Island, Lagos State.
He also has his assets in Oando PLC, one of the largest locally owned oil-producing companies in Nigeria, among several other properties and assets scattered around the country and internationally.
